Here is everything you need to know about composite and porcelain veneers.

    What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin plastic shells that are placed over the front surface of the teeth. It's like a cap that serves to hide imperfections, even out the teeth, or make your teeth look whiter. It is fabricated from different tooth-coloured materials, porcelain or composite resin.

Dental veneers are used for aesthetic purposes. They enhance your smile and make you more confident. You can cover a single tooth or multiple teeth at a time.

Whether you receive a composite veneer or porcelain resin type depends largely on your lifestyle habits and preferences. Speak to a dentist to get recommendations from them.

Like other dental restorations, you need to engage in good oral hygiene practices in order to improve your oral health.

Types of Dental Veneers in Singapore

    • Composite veneers. Composite veneers are the cheapest option but they also last 2-5 years. The material is a type of plastic. The thin shells are shaped directly onto the teeth.
Indirect composite veneers are made outside your mouth and are glued later on. With direct resin veneers, enamel-like material is added to your existing teeth to close any spaces or reshape them. It is done directly on the teeth.
    • Porcelain veneers. With a lifespan of 12-20 years and more, porcelain veneers are a much better option. Of course, they are also more expensive. Porcelain is a ceramic material and it’s quite durable.
    • Ceramic veneers. The thickness may be as thin as 0.3mm and may be compared to a false fingernail, or contact lens. They require less preparation of your teeth.

All veneers are engineered to adhere to your natural teeth. They look equally good. There are two main differences to keep in mind: cost and lifespan. In terms of cost, porcelain veneers are on the higher end of the price spectrum and composite veneers are on the lowest.

When it comes to durability, porcelain veneers are the best option, while composite veneers are at a disadvantage.

Preparation-wise, ceramic veneers are the thinnest alternative, which means the dentist needs to file down only a tiny portion of your tooth.

And finally, the biggest upside of composite veneers is their reversibility, unlike porcelain veneers.

How Much Do Teeth Veneers Cost in Singapore?

Dental veneers cost differently in Singapore. You will find that every dental clinic has its own price list. Just to give you a ballpark, composite veneers cost between $170 and $300 per single tooth. As you can see, the difference is significant.

Porcelain veneers cost a lot more. You will be paying a lot more to get a brand new smile, often in the realm of $720-$2,000 per tooth.

    Advantages of Dental Veneers

Dental veneers can give your confidence a huge boost, making you less self-conscious about your smile. This is the primary reason patients turn to us to perform the treatment on them. Who doesn't want a smile makeover?

Also, they look and feel natural. No one will be able to tell you to have veneers. You can eat and drink normally. They will not get in the way.

Third, dental veneers cover cracks and chips on the teeth. If you don't like the sight of chips and scratches on your natural teeth, this can easily be fixed.

Moreover, dental veneers hide discolouration and stains. This is obvious since they are positioned over your teeth like a cap. So any imperfections remain underneath.

The natural teeth colour might become yellowish over time as a result of smoking, ageing, and consumption of drinks that stain teeth. By placing veneers on top, these stains will become out of sight.

Plus, they require less enamel removal than dental crowns. As you already know, you will lose a bit of your enamel in order to get dental veneers in Singapore and elsewhere. But when compared to how much natural tooth structure you lose with crown orthodontic treatment, veneers are less aggressive.

Last but not least, they are low maintenance. It doesn't matter if you choose porcelain or composite veneers. All you have to do is brush your teeth on the regular like you are supposed to do. Remember that having good oral health is of great importance.

Who is a Good Candidate for Veneers?

The ideal candidate for veneer treatment is someone who is looking to enhance the contour or colour of their natural teeth. This means they have minor imperfections rather than significant misalignment issues.

    What Can Dental Veneers Fix?

    Discoloured teeth

Dental veneers can fix minor dental issues such as discoloured teeth caused due to large resin fillings, excessive fluoride use, stains from drugs like tetracycline, as well as root canal treatment.

    Mildly crooked or misaligned teeth

They can also camouflage gaps between the teeth, i.e. close lots of space between the front teeth. Dental veneers work great for uneven teeth, chipped teeth, or oddly shaped teeth.

It’s worth mentioning that they are suitable for slightly to moderately crooked teeth but they aren’t effective for severely crooked teeth.

If your teeth are worn down, dental veneers will help cover them and give you a new smile. They will look like a whole natural tooth.

As long as the material fits perfectly over the teeth, there is no chance of getting gum disease or tooth decay.

Why Should You Get Dental Veneers?

Getting dental veneers in Singapore is a great way to improve your smile, whether you want it to be brighter or more even.

People rarely have straight, well-shaped teeth. The majority of us struggle with stains, chips, and discolouration. Even though we know this, we still aspire to have perfect teeth.

The good news is that dentistry has come up with a way to achieve that. Thanks to cosmetic treatments like dental veneers, you can have a beautiful and bright smile in no time.

Should I get veneers or crowns?

The topic of dental veneers versus crowns is often brought up by our patients. They want to know which option is better and the truth is, it depends on how damaged your tooth is and the outcomes you are looking to get.

If all you want is to improve the look of your front teeth and you don’t experience any severe issues with them, dental veneers will be perfect for you.

However, if you have a large filling or you have recently undergone root canal treatment as a result of which most of your tooth has been removed, you will be better off with a dental crown rather than a dental veneer. Dental crowns work for overly damaged teeth.

    Dental Veneers Process

Here is what to expect from your dental veneer treatment plan.

Initial consultation and full dental examination

The first step is consultation. You will meet with one of our dentists and discuss your wants and needs. The specialist will examine your teeth to ensure you don’t have any ongoing issues that need to be addressed first. You should have healthy gums for this treatment to work.

If everything is going great during the initial consultation, the dentist will proceed to take pictures of your teeth to create the so-called mock-up.

This will help you to see how your new teeth will look once you get your dental veneers. It’s quite an important step in the process. You need to make sure you like the results before you move on to the next stage.

    Enamel preparation

Once we clarify all the details, you will go home. At the next appointment, the dentist will thin out your enamel. They will remove just as much as they need to create space for the dental veneers.

Next, a putty mould will be fabricated and left to harden. The dental impressions of the prepared teeth will be taken to a dental laboratory where your set of dental veneers will be manufactured.

In the meantime, you will get temporary veneers. You will be back on the dentist's chair to get your permanent ones. An acidic gel will be applied to all the teeth that will receive veneers.

The reason this is done is that the minerals on the front teeth need to be dissolved so that the surface becomes rough. This will make it easy for the dental veneers to adhere to it.

    Veneer placement on natural teeth

The last step of the treatment plan is to remove the temporary veneers and cement the final veneers on your teeth. This is followed up by a special light that serves to harden the glue.

At this point, you can still perform minor adjustments to the veneers. The dentist will eliminate any excess cement.

Everything takes just a few minutes. There is no downtime once the final restorations are done. You can start eating right away.

There are also no-prep veneers. Speak to one of our dentists to find out how you can get dental porcelain or composite resin veneers.

Proper Care for Dental Veneers: What to Avoid

    • Do not smoke; smoking can stain the edges of your teeth and become visible
    • Do not eat or chew on hard foods, bottle caps, bones, hard candy, ice cubes, etc.; your veneers may be damaged by that
    • Avoid consuming liquids with staining agents - although veneers are mostly fabricated from stain-resistant materials, they can still get stains over time with prolonged use; this applies especially to composite veneers
    • Avoid clenching your teeth - teeth grinding can break your veneers; if you are aware you have a clenching problem, talk to a dentist about how you can protect your teeth

What are the disadvantages of veneers?

    • Dental veneers can pop out if they are not permanently bonded to the front surface of the teeth
    • They can make your teeth more sensitive to hot and cold
    • You may develop tooth decay in those areas where the veneers don’t fit properly
    • Both composite and porcelain veneers can crack with teeth grinding
    • Once they are damaged, they cannot be repaired, which means you’ll need a new smile makeover by a dentist
    • Getting new veneers is expensive
