    two dental implants

Dental implants are popular and highly effective medical devices that replace missing teeth. They can help you improve both the appearance of your smile and the function of your mouth. Furthermore, implants are the only permanent tooth replacement method.

We at Pristine Dentalworks offer a variety of restorative services, including dental implant treatment. Here you can learn more about dental implants in Singapore - what types are available, what patients are suitable for implant treatment as well as what is the process of replacing missing teeth. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact our dental clinic.

    What are dental implants?

Dental implants are structures designed used in dental clinics to replace lost teeth. They are composed of three components namely a fixture (metal screw), abutment and implant crown. Dental implants are surgically placed and are usually a permanent solution for filling up dental gaps. Further, dental implant treatments don't require filing the adjacent healthy teeth, as with dental bridges.

In addition to restoring missing teeth, implants also protect the jaw from deforming. After tooth loss, it is possible that the jaws change over time and that this deforms your smile. Dental implants, however, are implanted into the jawbone, so by biting and chewing on the new tooth, they simulate a real tooth, which prevents the surrounding bone from shrinking.

The popularity of dental implants has increased significantly in recent years due to the fact that they offer much more benefits than other tooth replacement options. More and more patients choose them over traditional bridges.

What types of dental implants are available in Singapore?

There are many different types of dental implants in Singapore and they can be classified according to different criteria. Depending on their positioning within the bone dental implants can be divided into two groups and these are endosteal implants and subperiosteal implants. In terms of the number of implant pieces, there can be a single dental implant or implant retained denture. Based on the material of which dental implants are made, they can be categorized as titanium implants or ceramic implants.

    Endosteal

Endosteal dental implants are the most commonly used type. They are placed directly into the jawbone. The main advantage of this type of dental implant is that it works very similar to a natural tooth.

Endosteal implants come in different shapes including blade form and root form implants. Currently, root form implants are used more widely since they provide superior bone fixation. Blade form is a less common type. It is used in cases where the jaw bone is too narrow.

    Subperiosteal

Subperiosteal implants are placed under the periosteum and fixed over the jawbones. They are usually used to treat severe cases when there are many missing teeth, or when the jawbone width or height is insufficient.

    Single dental implant

A single dental implant procedure is usually performed when there is only one missing tooth. During this dental treatment, the adjacent teeth are not affected.

    Implant retained denture

Implant retained dentures or full arch teeth implants are used for multiple teeth replacement. During the procedure, the dentist will use a series of dental implants attached to an implant-supported bridge or denture to restore the entire arch of missing teeth. The technique is similar to conventional dental bridges but it offers more natural and permanent results.

    Titanium dental implants

Most dental implants are made of titanium, which is a biocompatible metal for the oral cavity. Furthermore, titanium implants have demonstrated over time their ability to bind to human bone and gums with little or no side effects.

Dental implants made of titanium offer several advantages such as high strength, low weight, corrosion resistance, low modules of elasticity, and ease of shaping and finishing. There is only one risk involved with this type of implant, which is that it can cause an allergic reaction. However, such an occurrence is extremely rare.

    Zirconia dental implants

Zirconia dental implants have been around since the late 1990s, but their use is quite limited and rare. The use of zirconia dental implants is still under research in implant dentistry. Research and specific data about its long-term effects on the mouth remain scarce.

Among the main advantages of zirconia implants are their high aesthetics and the fact that they can be used in patients who have an allergy to titanium. The price of those implants, however, is quite high since they are made in one body.

How much do dental implants cost in Singapore?

On average, the price of dental implants is between $2000 to $6000 per implant, and that is before Medisave. Still, there is no single answer to this question. It is important for you to understand that dental implant costs will vary widely from person to person as well as from clinic to clinic. Keep in mind that every patient has different needs and require different treatment approach. In addition, there are many different types and brands of dental implants in Singapore, and their prices differ greatly.

What are the factors that affect the dental implant cost?

    • The number of dental implants to be placed. It is obvious that a single dental implant will be less expensive than a full arch of implants.
    • The brand of the implant. Currently, there are probably around 20 to 40 or even more brands of dental implants available. Considering that these implants and brands are made in different countries and under different circumstances, their costs can vary greatly.
    • The complexity of dental implant surgery. For instance, some patients may not have enough bone tissue to place the implants. In such cases, the clinician may need to grow some bone around the area. The process is called bone grafting and it usually comes with additional costs. In general, the smaller the graft, the cheaper the procedure, and the bigger the graft, the more expensive the procedure becomes.
    • The method of placing the implants. In general, there are two methods for placing implants. The first one is the traditional method, where the doctor cuts the gums and lifts and raises them away from the bone, drills a hole in the bone, place the implant and closes it. It usually does not involve extra cost. The second method is through the so-called keyhole surgery and this involves the creation of a special guide. Compared to the first method, this is less invasive, but it normally involves a little extra expense.

What goes into the dental implant cost?

    • The examination, including CT scans, X-rays, and other procedures
    • The Software used to design the dental implant placement
    • The assistance and crew that works with you throughout the implant treatment
    • The scanning of the implant to make the crown
    • The digital team and the designer inside the lab
    • Surgical procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lift, if necessary to be done

Dental implants generally aren't very cheap. However, they offer a lifetime of benefits, making the investment definitely worthwhile. Please contact us if you would like a more specific estimate for the dental implant costs.

Who is a good candidate for getting dental implants?

Dental implant procedures are generally suitable for the vast majority of people. However, there are some specific factors that may indicate that you will be a good candidate for dental implants, and these include:

    • You have a missing tooth or you are just about to lose the tooth
    • You have enough amount of jawbone tissue
    • You are looking for a permanent solution
    • You have spent a lot of time and money to preserve certain teeth in the past, but you no longer want to do so
    • There is a lot of restorative dentistry in your mouth, such as fillings and crowns

What patients may not be good candidates for dental implant procedures?

    • Patients who don't have enough bone tissue. Some people may not be suitable for the procedure if they have been missing tooth for a very long time. This is because the jaw bone changes over time, which can accelerate the loss and wear of the remaining native jaw bone. Dental surgeons sometimes might be able to restore the bone through a surgical procedure known as bone grafting. However, in severe some cases, it might be hard to regain that bone necessary for placing the implant.
    • Individuals with a certain medical condition. To qualify for dental implant placement, you also need to be in good health. Patients who are unhealthy or have uncontrolled diabetics may not be good candidates for dental implant procedures. Additionally, there are a few absolute contraindications to dental implant placement, such as head and neck radiation and intravenous medications that may affect bone regeneration. The presence of these particular things can greatly increase the chances of complications following dental implant surgery. In this situation, it might be better to consider alternative tooth-replacement methods such as dental bridges or conventional dentures.

Please remember that it is usually hard to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for this procedure without visiting a dentist or dental surgeon. At Pristine Dentalworks, we offer comprehensive evaluations and can help you understand whether you are eligible to undergo dental implant treatment according to your case, your bone quality and quantity, and your health history.

    Tooth implant surgery procedure explained

Many patients have heard of dental implants but just a few of them really understand the details of what it means to get one. First of all, getting dental implants is a long process that can take longer than four months. Essentially, the duration of the treatment is determined by your needs and the selected treatment method. The approaches and placement techniques can vary based on the provider, the location of the implant in your mouth, and your current oral condition.

There are several steps in the process of placing a dental implant: consultation and examination, creating a customized treatment plan, preparation of jawbone (optional step), placement of the dental implant fixture, post-surgery recovery, placement of the artificial tooth and follow up dental visits.

    Dental implant consultation and examination

Dental implant consultation usually consists of an examination of the patient's dental health, a detailed medical history, and an examination of any indications and contraindications. Dental professionals typically take X-rays and 3D images that allow them to measure actual distances between neighbouring teeth, determine how much bone tissue is present, and determine the exact location where the implant tooth/ teeth will be placed.

    A dental implant treatment plan

The specialist will evaluate your condition and requirements and design a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs. Your provider will recommend the best dental implant type for you and explain how the treatment will proceed.

Bone graft/ Sinus lift (if needed)

If enough bone tissue is not available to support the implant, your doctor may have to perform a bone grafting or sinus lift surgery. The bone graft procedure involves the transplantation of graft material to repair and rebuild the bone structure. Material can be taken from another part of your body or it can be a bone substitute. The sinus lift procedure involves lifting the sinus cavity in order to allow space for the dental implant.

Dental implant surgery: placing of the implant fixture

The implant fixture is a part of the implant that serves as a tooth root. It is attached to the jawbone through surgery. The dental implant fixture placement is done by making cuts on the gum tissue and exposing the bone. After that, the surgeon will drill the holes into the bone and place the implant fixture into the bone.

Dental implant surgery can be carried out under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia depending on the number of dental implants placed at the same time. A single dental implant procedure is typically done under local anaesthesia while full-arch teeth implants may require general anaesthesia.

    Post-surgery recovery

The jaw bone should be allowed to heal and regenerate once the implant fixture has been placed. The implant site may feel numb and uncomfortable at first. It may be necessary to take pain-relieving medications to manage your pain. You will also be advised to eat soft foods during this time. The healing process can last up to 6 months.

Placement of the artificial teeth or prosthesis

After the implant fixture has integrated properly with the jawbone, you will receive a fully customized artificial tooth or prosthesis (if multiple dental implants are placed). The tooth will be designed to meet all of your needs, function like a real one, blend in seamlessly with the remaining natural teeth, and be aesthetically pleasing.

    Check-ups after dental implant treatment

It is important to have your regular check-ups every six to eight months following your dental implant treatment. Your dentist will examine the health of your entire mouth, the integrity of your dental implants, and address if there are any other oral health problems. In order to prolong their life and prevent further dental problems, dental implants require proper oral care and good oral hygiene.
